The result is bright, colorful nebulae images that “pop” with detail against the black sky background.

How does the Nebula Filter for Origin work? Emission nebulae primarily emit at discrete wavelengths of light—Hα at 656nm, Hβ at 486nm, and OIII at 496/501nm. By strategically transmitting only these wavelengths of light and blocking the rest of the spectrum, the filter dramatically reduces the effect of light pollution. The “bad” light is blocked while the “good” light associated with emission nebulae passes through to Origin’s sensor.

You’ll immediately notice much higher contrast in your images, especially from your light-polluted backyard! And since the transmission at the critical wavelengths is so high, the nebula will not be dimmed—only the background will be blacker. You’ll also notice some contrast improvement in images of nebulae from darker skies, as the filter serves well in blocking natural skyglow.

Nebula Hunting

The Nebula Filter is perfect for imaging emission nebulae like the North America Nebula (NGC 7000), Lagoon Nebula (M8), Orion Nebula (M42), the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), and dozens more. The imaging filter offers maximum light transmission in the key Hα-Hβ-OIII wavelengths, producing high contrast for emission nebulae like these.

The transmission spectrum for the Nebula Filter is 85% or greater at key wavelengths (486nm, 496nm/501nm, 656nm) and less than 0.5% transmission elsewhere. As a narrowband filter, it blocks much of the visible spectrum and only lets these specific wavelengths through. Because of this, you should not use this filter while observing or imaging broadband emission objects, such as galaxies and star clusters. For those objects, you’ll achieve the best results by removing the nebula filter and reinstalling Origin’s clear optical window.

Other similar imaging filters on the market have much narrower bandpasses at the critical Hα-Hβ-OIII wavelengths. Unfortunately, these filters block much of the incoming Hα-Hβ-OIII light for an f/2.2 optical system like Origin’s 6” RASA. This is because a RASA brings light into the filter at a steeper angle, which causes a spectral shift. If you use filters not explicitly designed for use at f/2.2, some of the light from the nebula will be blocked, resulting in a dimmer image. The Nebula Filter for Origin was custom-engineered to work at f/2.2, so none of the “good” light from the nebula is inadvertently blocked by the filter.

Body and Storage

The filter features a machined aluminum black anodized cell with a knurled rim for easy grip during installation. We’ve added anti-reflection coatings to help suppress reflections from the glass. You’ll notice much higher contrast in your images immediately, even if imaging from your light polluted backyard! And since the transmission at the key wavelengths is so high, the nebula will not be dimmed—only the background will be blacker.

Nebula Hunting

The Hα-Hβ-OIII Imaging Filter for the 8” RASA is perfect for imaging emission nebulae like the North America Nebula (NGC 7000), Lagoon Nebula (M8), Orion Nebula (M42), and the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372). The imaging filter transmits key Hα-Hβ-OIII wavelengths that produce high contrast for emission nebulae.

The transmission spectrum for the Hα-Hβ-OIII Imaging Filter is 85% or greater at key wavelengths (486nm, 496nm/501nm, 656nm) and less than 0.5% transmission elsewhere. The Hα-Hβ-OIII Imaging Filter for the 8” RASA is a narrowband filter that blocks much of the visible spectrum and only lets specific wavelengths through. Because of this, it will not work well on broadband emission objects, such as galaxies and star clusters.

Other similar imaging filters on the market have much narrower bandpasses at the critical Hα-Hβ-OIII wavelengths, but these filters will actually block much of the incoming Hα-Hβ-OIII light for an F/2 optical system. This is because the light is coming into the filter at a steeper angle, which causes a spectral shift. Using filters not designed specifically for use at F/2 will cause some of the light from the nebula to be blocked, resulting in a dimmer image. The Celestron Hα-Hβ-OIII Imaging Filter for the RASA 8 was custom engineered to work at F/2, so none of the “good” light from the nebula is inadvertently blocked by the filter.

Body and Storage

The filter is machined aluminum black anodized cell with knurled rim for easy grip during installation. An anti-reflection coating has been added to the filter to help suppress reflections on the glass. The three-axis adjustment. Most adapters rely on you placing your phone perfectly on the platform and only offer limited adjustment in two axes. But NexYZ gives you the power to place your phone on the platform, center it over the eyepiece with the X and Y knobs, and then move up or down over the eyepiece until you have the entire field of view in your shot.

And even though this adjustment is ultra-precise, it’s still quicker and easier than with other adapters. From start to finish, the process only takes about 30 seconds, including the time it takes to insert the phone into NexYZ, attach NexYZ to an eyepiece, start the camera app, and center the camera over the eyepiece using the knobs.

Switching phones, eyepieces, or optical instruments, requires only slight adjustments to re-center the camera over the new eyepiece. If multiple people want to capture a shot through your optic, NexYZ’s simple spring-loaded clamps make it easy to remove one device and replace it with another in seconds. NexYZ is the ideal solution for star parties and group bird walks where everyone wants their own shot of the action.

You can also switch your image from portrait to landscape simply by turning the padded eyepiece clamp and readjusting the X-, Y-, and Z-axis to realign your phone with the eyepiece.

NOTE: NexYZ is compatible telescopes, spotting scopes, binoculars, monoculars, and microscopes. This is especially true when using very fast telescopes like the 8” RASA because the sky background saturates very quickly. The “noise” of the light pollution overwhelms the “signal” from the celestial object you are imaging, making it difficult to get the most detailed image. The Light Pollution Imaging Filter for the 8” RASA remedies this by blocking light pollution while transmitting light from deep-sky objects. The result is bright, detailed objects that pop off the black sky background with superior contrast.

Fortunately, many sources of light pollution have relatively discreet emission spectra; they emit primarily at specific wavelengths of light. By strategically blocking these wavelengths, the filter greatly reduces the effects of light pollution without degrading overall image quality.

The Light Pollution Imaging (LPI) Filter for the 8” RASA blocks light from some of the most common sources of light pollution between 400-700nm (i.e., the visible spectrum), including high- and low-pressure sodium-vapor streetlights, mercury-vapor streetlights, and natural airglow caused by oxygen in the atmosphere. Unlike some light pollution filters, the LPI filter blocks only specific areas of the spectrum instead of wide regions. This helps to maintain image brightness and color balance. In addition, specific wavelengths associated with emission nebulae, such as H-α(656nm), H-β (486nm), OIII (496nm and 501nm), and SII (672nm), are highly transmitted, ensuring minimal loss of image brightness for those objects.

The filter fits directly into the internal filter mount in the RASA 8’s front lens cell, where the optical window normally mounts.
